- Our session will demonstrate through activity how to organize mass participation games in the gym that are non-competitive and fun for everyone, even the ones who don't like to sweat!
Building Confidence conference with Miss Teen NL and Miss NL!
- Presenters: Raylene Mackey (Miss Teen NL), and Charlotte Gushue (Miss NL)
- During this one hour presentation, come chat with Miss Teen NL and Miss NL about ways to build confidence, your self-esteem, and how to become a leader in your community.
Change the Future - Now!
- Presenter: Alicia Sutton
- Climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing the world today. This workshop focuses on how students can take action and be a part of the solution. Students will form groups, learn about climate change, create a climate change action plan for a school and present to peers. The session ends with voting for the Best Climate Change Action Plan – with prizes for the winning team. By the end of this session participants will have a collection of ideas to bring back to their school to make a difference and help change the future… now! Teachers are also welcome to participate in the session.
Changing the World: Can I Really Do That?
- Presenters: RADHOC Youth Leadership
- Our session is going to focus on inspiring youth to become leaders in their community, and in the global community. We place an emphasis on the idea that leadership cannot be taught, but rather it is something that can be learned through doing. We’re going to share stories of folks who wouldn’t ordinarily be thought of as “leaders”, but have in fact shown exemplary leadership qualities and skills. In addition, students will have the opportunity to be exposed to variety of global challenges or issues that will hopefully make them outraged enough to want to take action and create their own change!
Communication, Cooperation and Air Traffic Control
- Presenter: Shelley Bailey
- This session will focus on the importance of effective communication and teamwork in achieving success in the future. Being a leader is not always about taking over or talking loudest. Though activities and games, we will learn how to use our natural leadership skills and communication talents to have a positive impact on others by working together to make sure everyone is involved and heard. We will discuss how this applies in the workplace environment especially in Air Traffic Control where everyone has a leadership role and where teamwork is critical.
Coping with Cliques
- Presenter: Caroleann MacWhirter
- Identify how to protect yourself among peers, how to stand up for yourself and what you believe in; also how to identify that your friends may not be the right ones for you. Discussion of vision board creations to help you identify where you would like to be for a happier, healthier you.
CSLA and CSLC – You, Your Students and Your School

- Advisors will be introduced to the Canadian Student Leadership Association (CSLA), what it is, why it exists, who it is and what it has to offer Newfoundland schools. As well as the Canadian Student Leadership Conference (CSLC), what it is, where it is, and how to get your school to attend, as well as the benefits of attending.

Through connecting with your community, exploring your potential, experiencing the outdoors and physical activity you can set and reach goals in a challenging and fun way. Develop your leadership skills by developing a program that is best suited for YOU!!
Flipping the Classroom: Changing the Face of Education

- (Teacher session) Overwhelmed with all the buzz words surrounding education? Tired of trying to keep up with the latest and greatest? Feel like you never have time for those great activities you've planned? The flipped classroom may be just the answer! Find out how to incorporate website design, Google docs, iPad apps and more into the flipped classroom and free up much needed time for the 4 C's of 21st century learning. Bring your iPad or laptop and leave with some great things you can use to transform your classroom.
Games for the whole school
- Presenters: Shaun Galloway and St. Kevin’s Student council
- During this session we will practice a series of games that you can use for the whole school. We found that we have more participation during spirit days when everyone is active. Most of these games work best with 100 or more people. So, come along and be prepared to move.

Getting the Message Out – How We Can Help In Your Classroom
- Presenter: Jan Reid Eveleigh
- This session is for TEACHERS ONLY. For 20 years, Getting the Message Out (gmo) has been visiting classrooms all over the province. We talk to your students about recognizing opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador and share success stories about people who have created their own opportunities; whether it’s through an entrepreneurial venture or finding a career that they are passionate about. As a curriculum-based program, gmo is a valuable resource for your classroom. We can present to your class, we can send you a classroom kit resource, or you can print materials from the password-protected, teacher-only section of our website. If you don’t know what gmo is, or you’d like to learn more about how we can assist you in your classrooms, come to this session! We also want your opinions and thoughts on a potential new element of gmo.
Getting the Message Out (gmo)

- For 20 years, the gmo program has been visiting high schools around the province and presented to thousands of students. Our interactive prezi presentation is all about recognizing opportunities in our province – we share success stories of people from all over Newfoundland and Labrador who have created their own opportunities; whether it’s through entrepreneurial ventures or finding a career that they love. Come to our session to learn about some awesome things happening right here at home (did you know we have a video game company in NL? I know, right?!), and to get inspired about your future in Newfoundland and Labrador.
It’s Your Province, Have Your Say!
- Presenter: Office of Public Engagement
- Newfoundland and Labrador is looking to student leaders to help us identify new and unique ways for your friends and colleagues to have their voices heard. We have conducted sessions with almost 500 students over the last few months on topics ranging from careers, volunteering and ways government can engage youth. We need you to help us ensure that your voice is heard. This is an opportunity for you – the student leaders of this province - to provide direction and insight on these issues. Your feedback and ideas will be used by the Office of Public Engagement to influence how youth are consulted on the issues that matter to you. Have your say!

Outdoor Adventure: Leadership and Risk Management

- The context in which outdoor adventure takes place requires leaders to be self aware, demonstrate good judgment, depend on earning trust, create leadership in others, and use their intuition, compassion, common sense and courage to lead. The session will focus on decision making and problem solving skills through risk management and effective communication.

- Award winners Annette and Jennifer will take you through everything you need to do to get that perfect play on stage. They will take you through all the steps to make the vision a reality.
School Sports NL Programs and Activities, k-12

- This session is for teachers who would like to know more about the programs and services offered under our non-competitive program Participation Nation. Leadership opportunities exist for high school students who are part of school teams, and also to those who enjoy working with young children.
Small Schools- Big Leadership!
- Presenter: April Poole-Sampson
- St. Lewis Academy is a small K-12 school on the south coast of Labrador. With a student population teetering around 30, one would think there is very little happening. However, with the formation of a student council nearly a decade ago, SLA has transformed its student body into highly skilled, spirited, and dedicated student leaders. In our session, we will take students through the formation of a small school student council, and through a typical year in a rural school setting. What we do, how we have fun, and the plans that are needed to have a super spirited year- small school style!
Transformational Leadership
- Presenter: Gary Knapman
- We will, in groups both big and small, through discussion and personal anecdotes, explore the difference between transformational leaders and those that adopt a traditional style. We will touch on topics such as what is transformational leadership, what characteristics make up a transformational leader and does the transformational style of leadership fit every situation. This session is designed with the teacher as a leader in mind but is applicable to young and old alike.
