Important information for Students
In your suitcase make room for “Spirit Gear” you will need it for the opening ceremonies. In your head, you may be asking "UM, What’s Spirit Gear?" Spirit gear is noise makers, glow sticks, bells, banners, and school clothing. Let your imagination fly and the more noise and school spirit you can show the better. You will have the opportunity to show off your “Spirit Gear” when your school is introduced.
You will need a lot of casual clothes. Friday and Saturday are filled with activities and you do not want to be restricted because of your clothes. So wear clothes that allow you to slither on the floor, crawl under tables or make a person pyramid. For this reason, stilettos, skirts, dresses, etc. may not be the most practical choices.
Friday night, the theme for our dance will be “Wings and Other Flying Things!” Costumes and themes will include anything related to flight/aviation or anything that flies! Your costume can be related to airplanes or it can be a creature that flies. It can be something alive or mechanical, or even something that is related to the concept of flight in any way! Be as creative as possible - if it flies, flaps, floats or flutters then it's perfect for our dance.
This year at PSLC we'll be trying something new. We all hear the stories about bullying in our schools, and this year, we're going to try to do something to make a difference. On Saturday, we'll be hosting a Pink Shirt Day, which will be sponsored by School Sport NL. Everyone at the conference will get a free pink shirt, provided by School Sport NL, and throughout the day, we'll be working together to build resources for everyone to use. We want everyone to be included in our schools; this Pink Shirt Day will help us all figure out how to do it! You can help build on the fun and the spirit of inclusion by coming prepared to be as pink as possible - we want to see pink pants, shoes, earrings, hats, and whatever else you've got. Feather boas, pink flowered leis, pink hair extensions - it's all good!
On Saturday night, our closing banquet is SEMI-FORMAL. This means giving your jeans a break, and giving your dressy wear a chance to shine! No tuxedos or gowns necessary, but put in a little extra effort! After our Banquet, we are having another dance.
Don’t forget to be respectful to your billets. After all, they welcomed you into their home with open arms. You are required to follow their rules and all of the conference curfews. It is appropriate to give a card or some token of appreciation to your billets at the end of your stay. Also, please don’t forget to thank them upon departure from the conference.
Don’t forget to bring your cameras! Let’s face it: you will want to add pics to Facebook. Surely there will be memories you will want to capture so you can remember them forever and new friends you will want to tag.
Once registered, you should follow us on Twitter (@PSLC2013) and add us on Facebook. There are links on the top of this page.
Finally, there is only one bit of advice we can give you: this conference can only be as fun as you want it to be! This conference can be one of the most memorable experiences of your life if you take advantage of all that it has to offer. Make it a goal to make dozens of new friends by the time you leave on Sunday. But, don’t just meet them for a weekend. Maintain these friendships, as you can never have too many friends! This conference is your opportunity to shine and have fun with some of the greatest students in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Take everything you learn from this conference back to your own school. Get your peers involved in your school community. You are the leaders of tomorrow and the skills you learn today will prepare you for the future.
